Dikembe Mutombo stopped by the Good Housekeeping kitchens today to shoot a new video with America Cooks:

Until you’re standing right next to the man, it’s hard to appreciate just how tall 7 feet, 2 inches really is. Yet that’s just where we found ourselves – standing next to Dikembe around a simmering stovetop as he showed us how to prepare one of his favorite dishes.

Dikembe is one of the greatest shot blockers of all time, with eighteen seasons in the NBA and four NBA Defensive Player of the Year Awards under his belt. While many things are “not allowed in his house,” America Cooks went behind the scenes to find one thing that is – healthy and delicious recipes from the Congo.

He is the first of a number of high profile athletes who will be sharing their favorite recipes, kitchen tips and secrets to fueling their bodies for peak performance in our upcoming America Cooks with Athletes series. We met Dikembe in the demo kitchens at the Good Housekeeping Institute in Manhattan. There was not a basketball – nor gecko – in sight, but he was instantly recognized as an NBA favorite by everyone around.

Joining Dikembe on-camera was “The Hungry Fan” Daina Falk, an expert in marrying sport and food and curating the sports fan experience. Daina is a sports junkie, food fanatic and TV personality who has covered major sporting events as a freelance producer and journalist, including several Super Bowls for multiple national networks.

Dikembe and Daina teamed up to prepare what everyone agreed was a tasty dish perfect for any tailgate. The tomato based soup with chicken and peanuts was served over rice, and is a favorite in the Mutombo household. Dikembe explained that since his retirement, he does his best to prepare and enjoy nutritious meals with his family. He and his wife cook dinner together most nights, and at least two days a week they follow a Congolese recipe. We’re glad he shared his favorite dish with us —
stay tuned for the release of the episode, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of our shoot with Dikembe Mutombo!
